Le Forum du 28 novembre 2016 a fait le point sur les pratiques, les recherches et les grandes tendances en philanthropie à l’échelle internationale.
OBJECTIFS:
- Comparer les pratiques philanthropiques à l’étranger avec celles prévalant au Québec ;
- Comprendre les grandes tendances à l’échelle internationale ;
- Partager le contenu des recherches publiées aux gens du milieu – représentants d’organismes et de fondations.

GRANDES CONFÉRENCIÈRES
Femida Handy is Professor of Social Policy at the School of Social Policy and Practice at the University of Pennsylvania and the Director of the PhD program. Her research and teaching focus on the economics of the nonprofit sector, volunteering, philanthropy, nonprofit management, entrepreneurship, and micro-finance.
Prior to being Editor-in-Chief of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly in 2010-2016, the premier journal in the field, she served on the editorial board of several academic journals. Professor Handy has published widely in a variety scientific journals on a variety of nonprofit-related topics, and her work has garnered many awards. One area of prominence is her scholarship on volunteering and philanthropy, in an international context. Her recent books on philanthropy include The Practice and Promise of Philanthropy in India (2016) and as well The Palgrave Research Companion to Global Philanthropy (2015), which she co-edited. She has also written on environmental issues, including a children’s book that introduces the concept of ecological footprint.
Currently, Professor Handy ‘s research projects include a NIH funded research that investigates if and how autistic youth benefit by volunteering, if and how recent immigrants benefit by volunteering, and a study of the transmission of values and behaviors across generations in three countries. She is also co-authoring a book on ethical decision‐making in nonprofit organizations.
Before coming to Penn, Professor Handy was Associate Professor at Faculty of Environmental Studies, at York University in Toronto, Canada.
Susan Phillips is Professor and Supervisor of the Master of Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Carleton University’s School of Public Policy and Administration in Ottawa. Her research focuses on public policy and regulation governing philanthropy and the nonprofit sector, charity financing, cross-sectoral collaboration, community foundations and place-based philanthropy.
Susan is Editor-in-Chief of Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, the leading international journal in the field, and a board member of the International Research Society for Public Management. With UK colleagues (Tobias Jung and Jenny Harrow), she is co-editor of the Routledge Companion to Philanthropy, published in 2016, and is completing a multi-year study of the leadership roles played by community foundations.
She is recently returned from Australia where she spent part of the fall as the Ian Potter Foundation Scholar at the Australian Centre for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Studies at the Queensland University of Technology. In 2016, Susan received the Distinguished Service Award for by Canada’s Association for Research in Nonprofits and Social Economy (ANSER-ARES).
Au printemps 2016, deux publications de grande envergure ont vu le jour: The Routledge Companion to Philanthropy[1] et le The Palgrave Handbook of Global Philanthropy[2]. Ces deux publications découlent des recherches en philanthropie entreprises à travers le monde au cours des 10 à 15 dernières années. Même si la philanthropie est un champ de recherche relativement récent au Québec, ces deux ouvrages témoignent de la maturité de son étude à l’échelle internationale.
The Palgrave Handbook of Global Philanthropy propose une analyse des pratiques philanthropiques dans 26 pays. En plus de ces études de cas, l’ouvrage présente des analyses transversales sur plusieurs thèmes : les origines sociales du secteur sans but lucratif, l’influence du soutien gouvernemental, le rôle de la religion, les incitatifs fiscaux et les pratiques de levées de fonds. Les auteurs démontrent que certaines spécificités nationales (économiques, légales, gouvernementales) favorisent ou inhibent les dons caritatifs.
The Routledge Companion to Philanthropy définit la philanthropie comme « l’utilisation de ressources privées pour le bien commun » (traduction libre). Ce livre fournit une introduction et une exploration critique de la philanthropie, en présentant les plus récentes théories, recherches et pratiques de disciplines variées. L’ensemble des textes sont regroupés sous les thèmes suivants : les racines de la philanthropie, les géographies et les échelles de la philanthropie, les intersections de la philanthropie et des politiques publiques, les institutions et les expressions de la philanthropie, la gestion philanthropique et l’avenir de la recherche et de la pratique en philanthropie.
